KBS Gergean Celebration Brings Joy and Tradition to the Community

On March 16th, the KBS community gathered to celebrate Gergean, a cherished tradition in Gulf culture that brings families and children together in the spirit of joy, generosity, and cultural pride. The event was a vibrant display of heritage, featuring traditional music, delicious sweets, and lively festivities for all ages.

The History of Gergean

Gergean is a time-honored tradition celebrated in many Gulf countries, including Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. It takes place on the 13th, 14th, and 15th nights of Ramadan, marking the midpoint of the holy month. Historically, it was a way to encourage young children to participate in fasting, rewarding them with sweets and treats for their efforts.

The word “Gergean” is believed to originate from old Arabic, referring to the sound of children knocking on doors as they sing festive songs and collect sweets from neighbors. Over the years, the tradition has evolved, but it remains an essential part of Ramadan celebrations, fostering a sense of community, generosity, and joy.

A Celebration to Remember

The KBS 2 Gergean Celebration was a testament to the importance of keeping cultural traditions alive. It provided a wonderful opportunity for scholars and staff to come together and appreciate the beauty of Ramadan customs. KBS 2 looks forward to continuing this tradition in the years to come, ensuring that the spirit of Gergean remains a bright and joyful part of the Jahra community’s Ramadan celebrations.
